The Government of Meghalaya have decided to set up a State Law Commission for the State which shall be constituted by the State Govt. by notification. The Commission shall consist of such official and non-official members, not exceeding twelve including its Chairman and Vice-Chairman, as may be specified in the notification.
The Chairman may constitute groups within the Commission with any Vice-Chairman to head each group and allocate functions to them.
The Commission shall have a Secretary to be appointed by the Government and all communication to the Commission shall be addressed to the Secretary.
Any proposal to be taken up by the Commission may be initiated either at the instance of the Commission as a whole or the Legal Remembrancer of the Govt. of Meghalaya or, if the Commission agrees, at the instance of the Secretary to the Commission or any individual member. If any Department of the State Government desires to place any matter before the Commission, the Secretary to the Department will send the proposal to the Legal Remembrancer and the Legal Remembrancer will decide whether the proposal should be placed before the Commission. When the Commission takes up the revision or amendment of any Act or Rules which concerns any particular Department, the Commission may associate the Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya in the particular Department and the Secretary of such Department shall render all such assistance as may be required by the Commission.
