The Law Commission of Meghalaya was set up by the State Government vide Resolution dated 24th January, 1980. The Law Commission consists of such Official and Non-Official Members including the Chairman and Vice-Chairman as may be specified in the notification. The Commission functions for such period which may be extended from time to time by the State Government.

The functions of the Commission are mainly related to the Customary Laws of the States indigenous Tribals i.e., Khasis, Jaintias & Garos. The Commission has taken up various issues relating to the Customary Laws of the three Tribes and in consultation with Hon’ble Guahati High Court Judicial Branch and the Law Research Institute Guwahati has been able to published three books namely the Customary Laws of the Khasis, Jaintias & Garos. The Commission has also taken up various issues with the District Councils to which it has involved itself with the successful passing of The Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act, 1997 which defines who is a “Khasi”. The Commission follow up matters relating to Land Holdings of the Tribals in the States. Till date the Commission is involved in the above issues which relate to the Customary Laws.
